The Blanchette Family Aquatic Facility, designed by Kimley-Horn and Associates and constructed by Contegra Construction Co., will include a dual-passenger water slide, an open body-flume, and a climbing structure. The combined construction cost of both facilities is $18.5 million.
The city has been working to replace its aging pool system with three family aquatic centers in recent years. Those facilities are no longer fit for purpose, and the city must generate revenue to pay for operations. The existing pools were built during the 1950s, and St. Charles had three different locations in town. Eventually, the Blanchette Aquatic Facility was renovated to accommodate a new addition.Â

Lifeguards
A shortage of lifeguards has forced the closure of one of the city’s community aquatic centers, and the rest of the activities have been relocated to other locations. The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department is now looking to find new ways to generate revenue and keep its public aquatic facilities open. Originally, the city had three pool facilities – Blanchette, Wapelhorst, and McNair – but is now planning to expand the three facilities.
A lifeguard at an aquatic facility is necessary for safety and protection. In addition to training and certification, lifeguards must follow a standard protocol to ensure the safety of everyone. A swimsuit code requires that a swimsuit-clad lifeguard supervise a specific area at a time. The code requires lifeguards to wear safety vests and a corresponding lifejacket.
